Called to the Hard Places. Built for the Ones the System Missed.
Showing up where hope gets to work — because your story isn't over.
Hope and Futures exists to restore dignity, redirect paths, and rebuild futures — one person at a time. We are built to meet people in prisons, schools, and communities with practical tools, faith-rooted mentorship, and a deep belief that no one is too far gone for a second chapter.
Our Mission, Vision & Story
Just as a diamond can be hidden beneath layers of rough stone, a person's gifts, strength, and potential can be obscured by hardship. Hope & Futures exists to see beyond present circumstances, uncover what has been overlooked, and help every individual recognize the value that has been within them all along.
Restore, Redirect, Rebuild
To restore dignity, redirect paths, and rebuild futures — walking alongside youth, families, and justice-involved individuals with practical tools and steady, faith-rooted mentorship.
A County Where No Story Is Finished
A Santa Barbara County where no one — regardless of the classroom they sat in, the record they carry, or the family they were born into — believes their story is over.
Started With Showing Up
Hope and Futures began the way real change usually does — one person showing up again and again. After years working with at-risk youth in alternative-education classrooms and juvenile facilities, and volunteering in schools and prison ministry, Alex Rucobo founded Hope and Futures to build something lasting so no one falls through the cracks.
Our Core Values
Eight commitments that shape every conversation, program, and partnership.
Hope
We believe every future holds promise, no matter how dark the present season looks.
Resilience
We walk alongside people through hardship, trusting that struggle is not the end of the story.
Dignity
We treat every person — regardless of circumstance, record, or past — as inherently worthy of respect.
Compassion
We show up with empathy first, meeting people where they are before asking anything of them.
Empowerment
We equip people with practical tools and real opportunity, not just encouragement.
Integrity
We do what we say — faithfully, consistently, and without an agenda beyond genuine care.
Community
We believe no one rebuilds a future alone, and we widen the circle of support around every person.
Purpose
We help people rediscover the value and calling that hardship tried to obscure.
Diamonds in the Rough
We look beyond circumstances to recognize the gifts, strengths, and possibilities within every person. Through encouragement, opportunity, and support, what was once overlooked can be uncovered and allowed to shine.
Gold Purified Through Fire
Life's most difficult seasons can test us deeply. With the right support, people can move through adversity with their dignity intact, discover new strength, and emerge with greater clarity, confidence, and purpose.
“The rough does not erase the diamond, and the fire does not eliminate the gold. The value was always there.”
Practical Support, Wherever the Need Is
Hope and Futures is newly formed. These are the four areas we're building — grounded in where our founder has already spent years serving.
Youth Mentorship & Coaching
Building mentorship for at-risk youth — grounded in years spent in alternative-education classrooms, juvenile facilities, and on the court and field as a volunteer coach. Sports open the door; the relationship is the point.
Life Skills Education
Developing practical life-skills programming for students — honest conversation about decision-making, identity, relationships, and how to build a life worth living. No textbook. Just truth, real tools, and people who actually care.
Reentry Support
Building life-skills and financial literacy support for people preparing to come home — so release day becomes a real new beginning, not just a date on a calendar. Freedom starts before the gate opens.
ECM Services for Justice-Involved Youth & Adults
Hope and Futures has finalized a partnership with SOS Youth and Family to deliver Enhanced Care Management (ECM) services — coordinated, wraparound support for justice-involved youth and adults in Santa Barbara County. Contracting with CenCal Health is pending approval.

Founder & CEO
Alex Rucobo knows what it means to show up in the places most people walk past.
Through the Santa Barbara County Education Office, Alex worked with at-risk youth at Fitzgerald Community School and Juvenile Hall — in the classrooms and facilities most people never see, with young people most systems had already written off.
Alongside that work, he has spent years volunteering: coaching basketball and soccer with Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving with the Be Strong life-skills group for students, and joining a local church's prison ministry, walking alongside incarcerated men and women.
He founded Hope and Futures to build the organization he always wished existed — one that doesn't let people fall between the cracks, whether they're a teenager in a classroom nobody visits, or an adult counting down days to release.
“Every future holds promise.”
